Americans have this obsession with leaves, and it's not a good one. Sure they're fine when they're sitting pretty up in the trees, but as soon as that first Autumn wind blows a few to the ground it's game on! I'm sure most states are the same, with each town having its own rules (or laws) regarding leaf pick-up depending on your area; rural, urban, suburban... whether bagged or simply blown to the curb though it's a tiresome seemingly losing battle.
The bigger question though is not which of the latest and greatest overpriced pieces of equipment should be used (leaf blower, leaf vacuum, leaf bagger, leaf shredder, etc.), but rather why do most people spend so much time trying to rid their yard of this excellent and FREE natural compost resource?
Decomposing leaves feed the soil. That is the trillions of micro-organisms that live in healthy soil. And yet Americans make it their fall mission, waging war on nature's mulch/fertilizer, and not resting until every last leaf has been exiled from their lawn. As a society we'd rather spend hundreds of dollars a year per household putting chemicals down, in the form of weed killer, fertilizer, GMO seeds, or whatever "lawn food" the "experts" claim you need in order to get that perfect lawn.
This is a shameful ridiculous waste of time and resources! In my neighborhood the rule is you blow them to the curb and the town will come pick them up. You won't see any leaves at my curb though, and it's not because my part of the town doesn't have curbs... No, I see leaves as the valuable and precious natural resource that they are. And for this reason I rake up and utilize the bulk of what my yard produces as well as my neighbor's yard (to the right and left of me). Sure, they think I'm the nice helpful guy next door. And a bit crazy I'm sure. But the truth is pains me to see such wastefulness.
So what do I do with all these leaves you wonder (or not)?
I use them in the chicken's winter fenced in area as bedding. Since I give the pasture part of my lawn a rest from the chickens over the winter, and without daily rotation, this smaller fenced in area becomes dirt quite quickly. And bare uncovered dirt is, in any season, defenseless against the harshness of nature (sun, wind, and rain), which ultimately leads to infertile soil. So in an effort to maintain healthy soil and encourage a good microorganism population, I add a nice thick layer of leaves and fall debris for compost and cover. This helps maintain moisture and temperature while preventing the harsh effects of winter; a mud pit when snowing/raining and a frozen desert during the dry spells. This benefits the chickens by helping to maintain a vital food source (worms and insects), while benefiting the soil by providing food (decomposing organic matter and chicken poop) and cover.
So the next time you start to get that fall itch telling you to wage war on the fallen leaves, think twice about your actions. You would be doing your lawn a favor by utilizing the leaves as fertilizer as well as mulch for flower and shrub beds. You would also be doing your wallet a favor by saving money that would otherwise be spent on "lawn care".

What we should have learned from the Mayan's
When we think of the great Mayan Empire, as with many of the ancient empires that appeared to be ahead of their time (Egyptians, Aztecs, etc.), we can't help but to get lost in the mystique of it all. We think of all of the great inventions or technological advancements that they displayed whether architecturally, scientifically, and or agriculturally. And because we often get lost in these awe inspiring worlds that they often dominated, we never stop to question whether some of their so called "advancements" may have actually led to their demise.
This very question, "What was behind the mysterious collapse of the Mayan Empire?", has been the driving force behind much research, and recent studies have actually pointed to their environmental impact as the cause.
Sound like a premonition from the great Nostradamus as to the demise of modern society? It should!
It turns out that the Mayan Empire, like many of the "great" empires of our past, had advancements, in one area in particular, in common that had an enormous negative impact on the future of their survival; Agriculture. The farming of annual mono-crops to be exact.
The farming of annual mono-crops, and each empire had their own just as we do today (corn and soy), required (as it does today) unnatural and detrimental changes to the natural landscape in order to successfully yield a bounty worthy of a ruling nation. When we think of something like irrigation, destruction is not what comes to mind. We often marvel at the ability of these ancient civilizations to have irrigated in such a way as to support the hundreds or thousands of acres of mono-crops they farmed, but we don't often realize that it's these advancements that very well may have drained the life from their world as they knew it.
You can't successfully farm the acreage they did (as we do) without deforestation, or without the damning of rivers and rerouting the water as needed, or without the plowing of perennial prairie land or marsh land. And each of these environmentally damaging acts takes its toll on the environment, whether it be diminishing soil fertility, destruction of precious sensitive supporting ecosystems, or changes in overall climate.
Unfortunately though it seems to be human nature to focus (idealize) on the success of a nation and their ability rule, rather than to focus on their demise. If they were so great, where are they today? The same place we will be years from now if we don't learn from past (and present) mistakes!
Factory farming as it's called today, or farming that revolves around and depends upon mono-crops (corn, soy, etc.), cannot support a nation. It can only support its ultimate unavoidable demise. It leads to drastic negative environmental changes, possibly irreversible in our lifetime, but ultimately death and destruction. What we have taken from these deceased empires, the farming of mono-crops on such a large scale, has led to the overly processed high sugary foods consisting more of laboratory invented ingredients than of actual naturally occurring ingredients. It has led to the extinction of hundreds of thousands of species of both plants and animals, as well as to the onset of countless new diseases. It has led to the creation of GMO's and GE foods and animals. It has led to horrific animal and environmental abuse and cruelty that is so carelessly swept aside, all in the name of agriculture. It has led to a sick unhealthy nation dependent upon the pharmaceutical industry for survival. It ultimately will lead to our demise... unless we change!

Joel Salatin and the Future of Food
Watch this interview between Dr. Mercola and the leading pioneer in sustainable farming, Joel Salatin, as they discuss the future of our food and the importance of a locally based systems, in contrast to the larger industrialized factory system that is currently failing both people and environment alike on a global scale.
We can make a difference in changing our failing food system simply by being proactive when choosing where our food comes from.
Choose Locally Grown Sustainably farmed over factory made and factory farmed.
Choose Pastured meats and dairy over feedlot and grain fed.
Choose Organic non-GMO over its chemically fertilized herbicide sprayed round-up ready counterpart.
It doesn't take an executive order by the President or an act of Congress or even a bill to be passed in order to make a difference, the only tool we as the consumer need to change the future of our food is the power and freedom of choice!

Why you should avoid the doctor if you want to stay healthy
I came across this article Top ten reasons to avoid your doctor and I felt compelled to share.
I am in absolute agreement with all 10 reasons listed, like reason number 8:
8. Inappropriate and Unwise Dietary Advice
Most doctors are clueless about what constitutes a healthy diet. As such, they will recommend health catastrophes like artificial sweeteners, vegetable oils in lieu of butter, and fat-free pasteurized dairy products. Most will also neglect to tell you about the foods you could be eating more of to optimize your health, like fermented vegetables, raw dairy products, healthy fats (like saturated and animal-based omega-3s), grass-fed beef and more.
In addition, most are ignorant about the importance of how to cook your food – most foods are best consumed when raw or only lightly cooked, and this includes animal proteins like eggs and meat. A discussion about food quality is essential to health (i.e. getting your meat from a small local farmer instead of a confined animal feeding operation (CAFO)) but you will almost never hear this from your family physician. Wondering how to truly eat healthy? See my nutrition plan for a comprehensive (and free) guide. articles.Mercola.com July 25th 2012
Take your health and that of your family into your own hands, and do not trust those who are influenced and brainwashed by corporate greed!

Shake your way to a healthy lifestyle!
I think in today's modern society with its countless unavoidable toxins and pollutants that we are subjected to on a daily basis, a healthy "disease free" diet is more important than ever. But even when we do our best to eat all the right things; local organic produce, pastured meats, eggs, and dairy, we can still use a nutritional boost of insurance. And that's where my daily health shakes/smoothies come into play... they are fun to concoct, the ingredients and combinations of are practically endless, and they taste great!
So what's in mine you ask?
It varies depending on the time of year and available ingredients but there is definitely a few common themes...
Inhibit Inflammation, Boost the Immune System, Promote Healthy Digestion.
Here are some of the ingredients I like: (All Organic)
Turmeric powder (~ 4 heaping tsp) As I've mentioned before turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory as well as having both anti-cancer anti-tumor properties.
Ginger Root (~1-2 tsp) Ginger root has many health/medicinal benefits but it is probably most famous for it's ability to aid in digestion.
Wild Greens Supreme. In today's world where factory farming rules the landscape we do not consume nearly enough variety and of course quantity of greens (herbs), something our hunter-gatherer ancestors ate plenty of. This particular product is a blend of 5 powerful herbs high in Fiber, vitamins A, C, K, electrolyte minerals (Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium & Potassium) as well as Antioxidants, Flavonoids, Chlorophyll. A powerful product that aids in all 3 of my "healthy diets musts" I listed above.
Raw Cacao - (~3 heaping Tbsp in powder and/or bean form) This antioxidant power packed food. Don't be fooled though... The benefits of dark chocolate have given this American favorite a lot of air time lately but raw, unadulterated, unprocessed, 'refined-sugar' free cacao is the only true healthy way to go!
Raw Maca Powder - (~1 tsp) This powerful root is a highly nutrient-dense whole food packed with vitamins, plant sterols, essential minerals, amino acids and healthy fats. Not only beneficial to the immune system, it is a great energy booster!
Raw Chia Seeds- (~4 heaping Tbsp soaked) They are an excellent source of healthy omega oils, easily digestible protein, antioxidants, dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals. "In fact, chia is so high in essential fatty acids that it contains eight times more omega-3s than salmon, gram for gram". If you soak them in water (1 part seeds to 5 parts water) they become very gelatinous; you can soak a large batch and store them in the fridge, adding as much to your shake as you want.
Bee Pollen- (~1-2 tsp) Bee pollen is one of nature's nutrient dense power packed super foods, high in vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids, protein... It's another one of those foods that aid in all 3 of my "healthy diets musts".
Black Strap Molasses- (1 heaping Tbsp) Another one of nature's super foods! Just 1 tablespoon of this complex sugar contains over 700mg of Potassium and over 100mg of Calcium with zero fat!
Fresh Coconut- (Flesh and Water) These are one of my favorite foods; the flesh is high in fiber, healthy saturated fat, and the liquid has more electrolytes than any sport drink on the market! When I can't find organic fresh coconuts (from US) at my local health food store I purchase Raw Organic Coconut Butter as a substitute.
Enjoy!

Go Bare... foot that is!
A recent article "Barefoot running: bad or beneficial" has prompted me to write about a nonfood topic that I feel I have enough personal experience to comment on. When it comes to feet there are two sides of the fence; those that believe the over abundance of cushioning and support in modern day shoes and sneakers are crucial for maintaining healthy feet, and those that feel all of the cushioning and so called support in today's footwear simply restricts natural movement, obstructs muscle activation, and prevents natural gate corrections by driving 2+ inches of rubber between your foot and the ever changing environment beneath it.
I stand walk and run on this more nontraditional side of the fence, and I have the best kind of data and facts to back it up... my own recovery from painful foot injuries that was only made possible from the motivation and desperation that came to me as I limped out of the podiatrist's office disgusted disappointed and fed up for the last time.
It was about 4 years ago when I was diagnosed with severe tendonitis in me feet, which started in one and eventually affected both, and would plague me for 2 years. In that time, especially in the beginning I followed the more traditional path of primary care doctor, pain meds, specialist (Podiatrist), more pain meds, a few noninvasive procedures some costly and not covered by insurance, lots of rehab, and molded orthotics which in turn lead to many more disappointing visits to the podiatrist's office. That's when I stepped out of traditional shoes and into a radical belief that today's modern day foot problems are caused by the very shoes and sneakers that were supposed to protect them.
The foot and ankle consist of more than 26 bones 33 joints and over 100 muscles tendons and ligaments and together they make up this very complex anatomical structure that allows us to stand walk and run upright. Unfortunately when we walk and run shod in today's over restrictive and overpriced footwear we prevent their natural movement and severely limit muscle activation that leads to muscle atrophy and will eventually lead to injury affecting either the feet, the ankle, the knee, and or the back. Our bodies were designed to walk on softer uneven surfaces causing the muscles in our feet to constantly flex and contract with our toes working almost as fingers slightly cupping the ground beneath them; none of this is possible in a pair of traditional running or walking shoes, heck you can't even feel the ground let alone any subtle changes in the landscape. It has also been observed that when running (unlike walking) we should strike the ground with the padded forefoot first and then come down with the heel as apposed to the heel first approach used by shod runners. And the former makes more sense, it is the most padded part of your foot and your weight is already forward by nature.
To get back to my story though, I went from the useless crutch the medical community calls an "orthotic" to bare feet when I walk (or run) on natural surfaces and MBT's when I walk on manmade surfaces. If you've never seen or heard of these shoes they are sort of half moon shaped on the bottom forcing your foot to travel a further more complete distance while activating the muscles that are traditionally not used with classic shoes or sneakers. I prefer these over barefoot on manmade surfaces because they do give some padding and shock absorption when walking over surfaces that are hard and flat (unnatural).
I have since been able to do something the podiatrist told me I never would... walk without orthotics!

Wild Health... As Nature Intended!
So I have been reading this book Wild Health: Lessons in Natural Wellness from the Animal Kingdom by Cindy Engel, and I have to say this is a must read for all those that follow a more natural path to health and wellness. It is a very informative book packed with many examples of how wild animals not only stay healthy but rid themselves of sickness naturally, if and when it occurs. With the countless natural remedies out there for the taking and the animals instinctiveness to seek them out when in need is nothing short of amazing to me. Even with many of these herbs being toxic if consumed in excess or at the wrong time or alone (instead of in combination with another herb), it seems wild animals have mastered natures medicine cabinet.
One of the things she talks about is the contradicting views regarding the health of wild animals based on observations recorded of domesticated (or wild captive) animals. Whether it be lab rats or industrial (large scale) farm animals, when the animal is not given access to its natural habitat an accurate conclusion on the state of their ability to avoid and combat sickness and disease cannot be drawn. It was thought for many years (and still is today) that contact with wild animals is to blame for sickness and disease of farm animals, but in reality it's the poor immune systems of domesticated (or captive) animals that are to blame.
Cindy makes the point that in nature wild animals carry many pathogens, but it's their immune systems ability to keep the balance between the good and bad bacteria within the body at a safe HEALTHY level, that truly makes for a healthy animal.

A Natural Approach to Healing
This is a topic I have wanted to post about for some time now, but wasn't really sure how to make the transition from allergy free cooking to natural healing... well I think I have since made that transition over that past few years, so here is my official unofficial introduction.
I have been intrigued by this subject (Natural Healing) for some time now and have been practicing it religiously since I became aware of my food allergies. I have come to understand that any ailment the body is struggling to cope with, whether it be allergy related (both food and seasonal as well as asthma related), structurally based (tendonitis/arthritis/muscle and joint pain/etc.), or disease based (cancer/heart disease/diabetes/etc.) they are all diet related and all have some common link to inflammation.
Our bodies are stressed beyond levels that they were ever designed to be subjected to, and from nearly every aspect of our lives. We live in a very 'man-made' toxic world, and its how our bodies individually deal with these toxins that ultimately dictate our overall health. Whether they are the unavoidable toxins such as pollution from cars, factories, or the billions of tons of jet fuel dumped into the atmosphere every day, or those toxins we can avoid like the cancer causing chemicals in our food, drinking water, hygiene products, cleaning products, and in most all of the everyday products we come into contact with, the truth is our immune systems are being taxed to the extreme and it's our (your) job to do something about it!
I will conclude my introduction into a natural approach to healing with this basic creed for living healthy...
Stay healthy by eating organic locally sustainably grown foods whenever possible and 100% organic GMO free minimally processed foods to complement your diet; use only 100% chemical free organic hygiene products; use only 100% naturally derived household cleaning products, and avoid all products containing toxic chemicals.

Lets Root for Anti-inflammatorys
Being someone who suffered from chronic inflammation for many years and continually came up short with any Rx or over-the-counter drug, it's no wonder why I have a special place in my heart for any natural anti-inflammatory. So if you're like me and have long given up on popping pills to relieve inflammation, then you're in luck because hands down nature has the best anti-inflammatorys around.
Fear not though, you won't have to Root around very long to find some of these little natural wonders. Actually many of them are right there in your spice rack, and if you buy organic food products, spices in this case, and you're actually using them, then you're definitely getting some of their benefits.
Why stop (short) there though... when a recipe calls for "freshly grated" or "freshly chopped" or "freshly minced" spices then do your food and your health a favor and use the actual root. One of the most commonly called for (fresh spices) and conveniently enough commonly offered "roots" is the ginger root, and take it from someone who cooks/eats homemade meals every day... it's well worth the minuscule amount of extra effort it takes to substitute a couple of shakes of dried powder with the fresh stuff, and the difference in flavor will amaze you.
Since health is always my first priority though, ending with the flavor benefits would be, well, incomplete to say the least. The fact is, studies show that ginger root has many therapeutic properties one of which is the ability to inhibit the formation of inflammatory compounds as well as having direct anti-inflammatory effects. Ginger has been used for thousands of years for alleviating gastrointestinal problems (gas to be exact) as well as to aid the digestion process. More recent studies confirm these beneficial qualities by proving ginger to be far superior to Dramamine (or equivalent drugs) for preventing symptoms associated with motion sickness and especially those of sea sickness.
It's true that organic processed foods are no doubt superior to non-organic processed foods, but the fact is that these processes, whether preformed to Organic standards or not, deplete foods of some of their nutritional properties. So remember, fresh is always best whenever possible.

Plants Over Prescriptions Any Day
As I've made mention to in my bio as will as throughout a number of posts, opening the door to Nature's Medicine Cabinet can be the healthiest choice you will ever make.
Due to my own trials and tribulations I have all but given up on modern medicine for non-emergency treatment, and have turned to nature for any and all cures. I am a firm believer in Natural Healing (curing and prevention) through a healthy diet, healthy lifestyle, and supplementary treatment using holistic/herbalistic/supplement based therapy from a kinesiologist.
I truly believe that the side-effects of prescription and over-the-counter drugs poses far more of a threat than any short term benefit they may have.
It's important for people to understand that despite what you've been brainwashed into believing, Plants Are Medicine! They contain compounds that exert a high degree of pharmacological activity, and despite what the medical community wants you to believe 25% of all prescription drugs in the U.S. contain active constituents obtained from plants... and have for the past 30 years!
The Healing Power of Foods by Michael T. Murray N.D.
So if the pharmaceutical companies rely so heavily on plants, then why in the world would anyone choose synthetic drugs over herbal medicines? Herbs are less toxic with less side-effects, not to mention they are used to fix the body's underlying health problem instead of treating symptoms as synthetic drugs do.
The problem is most people don't know the truth...

Kale Over Milk for Calcium
Kale is one of those super healthy foods that we should all be eating a little more of. It is very rich in vitamins, minerals, and anutrients such as pigments carotenes and chlorophyll, giving it many anticancer properties and making it among the most nutritious of all vegetables.
It's the levels of minerals though, particularly Calcium, that I find especially intriguing.
Did you know that a cup of kale actually has more calcium than a cup of milk... An important fact that anyone suffering from a dairy allergy will be delighted to know.
Americans are so brainwashed into thinking the only way we can get our daily allowance of calcium is by drinking milk, but the truth is dairy allergy or not, milk is not the smartest choice. (See 'Milk Allergies on the Rise') We know that nutrients work together and that the consumption ratios of one to another is in some cases more important than the actual quantity consumed, but when these nutrients are consumed in ratios that are not ideal these nutrients will actually work against each other; this is the case with calcium and phosphorous.
Since phosphorous can reduce the utilization and promote the excretion of calcium if consumed in high amounts with respect to calcium, kale becomes a more ideal source than milk since kale contains almost 3 times the amount of calcium than phosphorous (3:1). Milk on the other hand has just about a 1:1 ratio of calcium to phosphorous, and that coupled with the fact that milk has a calcium to magnesium ratio of nearly 6:1 (ideal is 2:1 since magnesium is very important for the absorption of calcium).
So whether you have a dairy allergy, have finally waken up to truth about dairy, or are simply trying to avoid osteoporosis which is very common in woman (and not uncommon in men), then I'm sure you too will find this to be very enlightening.

A Natural Approach to Diabetes
I am a firm believer in a NATURAL approach to health and wellness, and I practice it religiously. I have had great success with this approach in all areas of my life, most notably when the modern medical approach failed me.
Anytime I come across a natural remedy or cure, regardless of whether it pertains to a health condition I am dealing with personally or not, I feel it's important to share the findings with others in hopes that maybe they will find out for themselves what I found out some time ago...
The Natural Path to health and wellness is the best and most affective approach!
So with that introduction say hello to the Bitter Melon (or balsam pear), a topical fruit native to Asia Africa and South America, available in America primarily at Asian grocery stores. This nutrient rich fruit shows very promising results in the treatment of diabetes, with its blood-sugar-lowering abilities confirmed through scientific studies in both animals and humans. This melon contains the compounds Charatin, which is more potent than the drug tolbutamide (often used to treat diabetes), and polypeptide-P (an insulin-like compound that appears to have fewer side effects than insulin) and has been recommended as an insulin replacement for some patients.
The recommended dose for medicinal purposes is a 2-ounce shot of the juice.

Carotenes are the Fountain of Youth
It is well known that the natural pigments in the fresh foods that we eat (the reds, yellows, and greens) have many health benefits, and a diet rich in these foods is important for achieving optimal health, but did you know that Carotenes (the most widespread group of these naturally occurring pigments) may actually be the key to longevity.
In the world of nutrition Carotenes are best known for their capacity for conversion into Vitamin A, but unlike a vitamin A supplement which can be toxic in excess, the body stores unconverted carotenes in fat cells, epithelial cells, and other organs; there is no know toxicity to carotene.
It's this storing of carotene in the cells that makes this pigment so extraordinary. Studies have shown that there is a strong correlation between carotene intake and various cancers involving epithelial tissues... the higher the carotene intake, the lower the risk for cancer. So what does this mean?
Since cancer and aging share a number of characteristics (i.e an association with free-radical damage)
it leads to the idea that preventing cancer should promote longevity, and there is great evidence supporting this because it appears that there is a better correlation with the maximal life-span of mammals and tissue carotene levels than with other factors. And since tissue carotenes appear to be the most significant factor in determining a species' maximal life-span potential, it only makes sense that those within a species that have the highest carotene levels in their tissues have the greatest chance of living the longest.
Below are carotene levels (in um) in common foods
Apples (unpeeled)--> 5,500 to 12,600
Carrots-------------> 11,100
Butternut Squash--> 17,700
Kale-----------------> 75,000
Beet Greens--------> 10,000
Collard Greens-----> 20,000
...and yes increased carotene consumption can cause the appearance of slightly yellow-to-orange tinted skin, it's called carotenodermia and it is not harmful; in fact it simply indicates that the body has a good supply of carotenes.

Diet vs Depression
Listening to the news on the way in to work today I heard them mention a study being done (in France I believe) as to the effects your diet has on depression; more specifically poor diets high in processed foods.
The number of people especially children being diagnosed and treated with prescriptions for some form of depression on a yearly basis is dramatically increasing at an alarming rate. If you do some research you will see that the numbers are very disturbing.
I think it's great that such studies are being done and I think the medical community should start putting a lot more stock into diet as the cause for many of the illnesses and chronic conditions that plague our society. Modern medicine and medical practices have proven to be very effective in emergency treatment situations and I wouldn't want to live in any other country for that reason alone, but unfortunately this same medical community has proven to be simply horrible at curing or preventing diseases and chronic illnesses. They would rather look in any other direction then in that of basic human health (dietary needs, importance of vitamin and mineral supplements, fresh organic whole foods over processed foods...) resulting in a very arrogant "incurable" label put on just about everything; diabetes... no cure, cancer... no cure, heart disease... no cure, chronic anything... no cure.
I hope this study proves what I've read numerous times in numerous books by numerous authors, that a healthy diet and healthy lifestyle is not only the best preventative medicine but can also cure what ails you.

Curry versus Cancer
The latest headline reads "Curry compound kills cancer cells, study shows".
The truth is, over the years there have actually been a number studies showing the health benefits of curcumin, the compound found in turmeric giving it its yellow color; from its anti-inflammatory and anti-pain qualities, to its detoxifying abilities, but it's the anti-cancer qualities that make this Indian spice so unique.
It's been considered by many a wonder spice and even referred to as Indian Gold, and it's great to see new research is bringing one of nature's true miracle foods into the limelight within the a medical community that has always been so reluctant to give natural remedies its do credit.
If you enjoy Indian foods than make sure you add turmeric and curry to your organic spice arsenal, but even if you're not a fan of the taste try substituting mustard for mao on your next sandwich.
Open up natures medicine cabinet and start reaping the benefits today!

Flu Prevention
There has been so much talk recently regarding Flu Prevention (both swine and regular) with most if not all the emphasis on washing hands and getting your flu shots, but I'm still waiting for the "experts" to mention the importance of a healthy diet.
Our bodies have amazing potential to fight off colds and illnesses, but only if you do your job in supplying it with what it needs to maintain this healthy immune system. A healthy body has an impressive army of fighting cells just waiting to seek and destroy any intruders (bacteria, parasites, germs of any kind), if it's been properly equipped with the weapons it needs... vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, and other key nutrients, none of which you are getting from skipping breakfast (or picking up something at the coffee shop to munch on) having takeout for lunch and throwing some pre-made heavily processed meal in the oven or microwave for dinner.
If you're not eating a healthy diet consisting primarily of fresh (hopefully organic) produce and whole foods, supplementing your diet with key nutrients like vitamins C, B, D, etc (seeking the help of a health care professional to determine dosage of course), and avoiding those foods you are allergic to then all the hand soap/sanitizer and flu shots in the world can't save you. And I'm sure you have the medical bills and sick days to prove it...
A healthy you starts with a healthy diet, it's as simple as that!

The Fountain of Youth
The fountain of youth... it's been dreamed up, written about, and sought after by countless for many years, but does this mythological place dreams really exist?
Can scientists make fantasy into reality? Or better yet can some large company package this science experiment into some appealing pill or cream and market these products of false hopes as the real deal?
Obviously the answer is yes, just look down the beauty aisle or pharmacy aisle of any grocery/convenience store... they wouldn't sell if they didn't have any takers.
What if the fountain of youth wasn't a mystical place at all, but rather something more tangible.
What if it's actually something our bodies cry out for, and for those who hear the cries and choose to answer them have been benefiting from for years.
What if you can find this "fountain of youth" in a place as common as your local grocery store, or health food store, or local farm stand.
What if this "fountain of youth" had another name, something we've all heard before.
The only true way to stay feel and look healthy (or young) is to actually be healthy, and the only way to achieve this is through a healthy diet.
Eat fresh organic whole foods, grass fed meets, and free grazed poultry and eggs instead of that Big- Mac bag-of-chips energy drink frozen dinner diet you're use to, and your "youth" might not be so un-obtainable!

Overcoming Food Allergies
I often hear from others, even some with food allergies themselves, the same statement followed by the same question; "I'd die if I had a soy allergy... it's in everything, what can you eat?"
When I first found out about my food allergies (dairy and soy), and the impact soy has on the typical Americans diet, I went to my kinesiologist with the same panic in my voice asking him the very same question. His answer was simply and straight to the point... He said Mike there are many cultures out their most if not all far healthier than ours that have been existing for hundreds of years on diets that do not consist of dairy or soy", and he was right.
So the answer I give to those who ask me "it's in everything, what can I eat?", is just as simple and straight to the point... you can eat healthy.
It's really that simple. At first glance we think soy is in everything, but look a little deeper and you will see what I have; that most everything soy is in is unhealthy. It's in most any and all processed foods, so much so that the average shopper may feel there is nothing left in the grocery store safe for them to buy.
That is because most people are use to eating a diet high in processed foods, and not the healthier variety.
Introduce yourself to the produce aisle, and enjoy all the fresh organic produce you can find. Then introduce yourself to the organic section of your local food store (or your local health food store) and look for substitutes for the few processed foods you are sure to still purchase. Always look for those foods with the fewest ingredients; all natural, no preservatives and no additives of any kind.
See that wasn't so hard after all.

Sprout Your Way to a Healthier You
I read an article talking about the health benefit of broccoli sprouts, apparently studies show that eating broccoli sprouts can help those who suffer from seasonal allergies or asthma by triggering an increase in inflammation fighting enzymes.
I've mentioned many times the importance of eating foods in their whole unprocessed form, but there are also many foods (Grains such as wheat and barley, Seeds such as broccoli, alfalfa, and brussels, and Legumes such as peas and mung beans) that you can benefit from by eating them in there "sprout" form.
Sprouts have been a part of human's diets since ancient times, and are often considered "Wonder Foods". The benefits of eating sprouts are endless; increased levels of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients with the added benefit of increased digestibility.
They are quite easy to grow at home and also available in many food stores, so there's no excuse why there not a part of your diet.

A Natural Remedy in Your Own Back Yard
You would probably consider yourself unlucky if you had a black walnut tree on your property, especially if it were anywhere near your driveway (those golf ball to racket ball size walnuts can make a mess of your car). I know this because I grew up with one hanging over into our driveway, from reaching over from the neighbor's yard. I can remember always being alert when standing under it, quick to jump out of the way with little warning. Whether it was gravity alone or just a clumsy squirrel, those walnuts were not something you wanted hitting you in the head...the squirrels loved them though, and maybe they were on to something.
It turns out the green hull that surrounds the walnut (yes its green not black, but it stains black when exposed to the air) has very powerful anti parasitic, antiseptic, anti microbial, and anti fungal qualities, as well as being good for digestion and also useful as a mild laxative.
As you know consuming foods we are allergic to compromises the lining of the intestinal walls, which directly affects your immune system. It creates the perfect environment for parasites and bacteria to flourish. I battled this myself as a result of consuming dairy and soy for years, not realizing the harm it was causing my body; the constant ear infections, loose stool, stomach cramps, you name it.
It just so happens that the very walnut that tormented our yard and cars, would come to be an integral part of my recovery. My kinesiologist prescribed it, and along with other natural remedies, fixed the damage that years consuming milk and soy had done.
